Making The Music

I'm Jasper Hawkins, and this is my behind the scenes journey of writing and producing songs, from rough demos, to studio sessions... to final recorded versions.

Voice Memo Demos

The demos for the album

The First Logic Demos

I spend some time in logic getting my ideas and other instrumentation out for the first iteration to start finding the vibe of the songs. They feel a little one dimensional to me at this time but start taking shape...

Traffic Light Mind

Drum Notes For Eden

Traffic Light Mind - Try missing second accented note in the verse to break up the pattern. The chorus end needs the drums to follow the lyrics/guitar run down with accents 'It's all right, ..... drive, it's all right"

Try hi hat swing with controlled open/close hi hat accents like this. I can refine the exact groove with you...

Finalising Basslines

Notes To Get To Tracking Final Drums + Bass

  • Knock Knock: Bass + Drums Ready To Go
  • Silicone: Bass + Drums Ready To Go
  • Gone: Bass + Drums Ready To Go
  • Nothing More To Say: Nothing More To Say

  • Traffic Light Mind: I want this feel. soft and light. I am not in the pocket here and it's a bit sloppy but the idea is right...

  • She's A Winner: A couple of groove options (Remi + Edens takes, maybe an amalgamation, I think the kick pattern is key for creating the correct drive)
  • Lost In The Post: Drums sounding great. Lachie made a few key structure changes so need to lock in with drums and maybe add a fill or two then ready to go. Very close.
  • Alone In My head: Try taking out hi hat opening in 'hold' lyrics for last 2 measures of bridge. ie come back to the standard rhythm with fills to lead in to the last chorus.
  • Shut Up: Still Bass To work on this but prob pretty simple. Run groove by lachie. Keen for his input
  • None Of It Mine: Run Drum Line by lachie. Keen for his input
  • God Is Watching: I think the original tracking is great. Just Needs drums added. Need to play with chorus groove as there are two many cymbal notes. Again Lachie's input would be great.
  • Opened The Door: Drums sound good. Keen for Lachie's input. Need to go over bass.
